White Hall Vineyards visit

After leaving Oakencroft Vineyards and jumping back onto the Monticello Wine Trail, our next stop, just as picturesque, would take us just outside of Charlottesville to White Hall, VA.

White Hall Wines pictured

Named appropriately, White Hall Vineyards is situated amongst scenic green acres with stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and surrounding area. The grounds are nicely landscaped and well manicured, and in bloom were all sorts of gorgeous colorful flowers to admire.

The outer appearance of the winery is very attractive and quite contemporary juxtaposed to some of the dated and classic styles that are equally as charming. On the inside, one would find it to be equally as pleasing with lots of detailed artwork, spaciousness, and a very nice tasting area.

Moving onto our complimentary tasting, the following wines were being poured: Vin Gris 2005,Chardonnay 2004, Chardonnay Reserve 2003, Pinot Gris 2005, Cabernet Sauvignon 2003, Cabernet Franc 2004, Touriga 2004, Petit Manseng 2005 (1st Vintage), Soliterre 2003 (white blend), Sugar Ridge White 2003 (sweet white blend), Breakheart Red (red blend), Merlot 2004, Viognier 2005, Gewurztraminer 2003, Petit Verdot 2004 and lastly Cuvee Des Champs 2003 (Bordeaux styled blend).

All the wines were quite tasty and lived up to their description and prose in the tasting notes. Our tasting experience was really nice as our tasting associate offered lots of information about the winery and each wine being poured.

Happy patrons !!!

With over 15 wines poured and all being of sound quality and reasonably priced, there were several that stood out and made their way home. The Cuvee Des Champs 2003 Bordeaux styled blend displayed pleasant berry and plum aromas and was just as pleasing on the palate with a nice long and lingering finish. The Chardonnay 2004 was refreshing with ripe apple notes on the palate and tree fruit aromas. The 2004 Touriga Nacional, a Portuguese varietal, displayed the dark color, dark fruit aromas and flavors found in classic examples of this red wine. On a side note, Touriga is the main grape variety used to make classic Port wines. A stickler for Petit Manseng, an old varietal from the Jurancon region of southwestern France, was highly aromatic as expected and displayed tropical flavors with a nice clean finish. Petit Manseng should catch on in Virginia, as several wineries are already vinifying this variety on it’s own, and this example was quite exceptional for White Hall’s first vintage. Lastly, the Petit Verdot 2004 displayed a medium garnet color, dark fruit and vanilla aromas, with a smooth and elegant mouth feel, laced with supple, yet ample tannins.

I bought both the Touriga and the Petit Verdot. The port-style wine was also intriguing. I'm still not a Petit Manseng fan, but I may get there! Anyway, glad you enjoyed the wines here, because we did too!

Hello Warren,

Sounds like you guys had a wonderful time as well. White Hall is such a lovely place is it not? I also enjoyed the Touriga and Petit Verdot.

I will have to find the 2004 Veritas Petit Manseng and let you give that a try; that is one of my favorites and the winery is sold out, but a few local stores may still stock it.

Have a wonderful day Warren.

Hi Dezel,

You'll be happy to know that I just bought a bottle of VA wine, a White Hall Viognier (2004).

Haven't opened it yet, but I'm sure it won't be long before we open it.

Oh...and I envy your wine fridge.

Hello Alan,

Glad to hear you secured a bottle of the White Hall Viognier. Be sure to smell this one; it has a pleasant aroma. You might catch the Viognier bug and start to pile quite a collection.

Let me know your experience with the bottle.

Have a great day.

Happy Sipping!

Dezel
