Three Fox Vineyards visit

After our visit to Winery at La Grange , we headed for Tuscany , or at least the closest thing to the quintessential Italian region in Virginia . Three Fox Vineyards, located in Deleplane , VA is a young winery that specializes in namely Italian varieties. The winery sits upon 50 acres of picturesque Virginia country side with spectacular green rolling hills and magnificent views.

Three Fox Vineyards

We were greeted before reaching the door by Holli Todhunter, who along with husband and winemaker John Todhunter, are the winery owners. It was great chatting with Holli; she told us all about the winery, their wines, and showed us the spot atop the hill where a new tasting room will be built in the future. While we were talking, we could not help but enjoy the attractive views and the flower garden. The property is truly impeccable with loads of Nature’s own eye candy.

After chatting, we moved into the nicely decorated fox themed tasting room where the following wines were being poured: Chardonnay 2004, Chardonnay 2005, Vidal 2005, Sangiovese 2005, Sangiovese Reserve 2005, Merlot 2005, Cabernet Franc 2005 and lastly the Nebbiolo 2005. While tasting, we had good conversations with our tasting associate and John who was pouring next to us. We were told about all the wines poured, and found that regular trips to Italy was inspiration for Holli and John to create their own personal Tuscany in the heart of Virginia Hunt Country for all to enjoy.

The wines I noted during our tasting were the 2004 and 2005 Chardonnay; both displaying nice fruit and acidity, with the 2005 having mild notes of oak, while the 2004 was a fruit forward summer patio sipper. The Sangiovese 2005 is a pleasantly smooth wine with red fruit and cherry flavors that rounds out nicely on the palate from mild oak aging. The Merlot 2004 displayed a nice deep ruby color with dark berry fruits flavors on the palate and would make a nice food pairing wine.

Following our tasting, we decided to bask in the day and beautiful surroundings and enjoy a glass of the Chardonnay 2004; lucky for us a group was leaving the lone spot on the hill so we headed uphill to claim the table. The lone spot atop the hill plays host to gorgeous views and is all about "La Dolce Vita," or the sweet life. As we were seated several other parties were watching closely for us to leave so they to could claim the lone spot atop the hill and enjoy her visual rewards. A tasting room atop this hill would definitely provide spectacular views from all directions, a wonderful compliment to good Virginia wine indeed!

As soon as we rose from the chairs, sure enough, another party was headed up to claim the lone spot atop the hill. We decided to take a stroll of the property and down a hill was another really nice picnic area with trees, hammocks and a flowing creek. There is also a row of comfortable shaded barroom styled tables/chairs and regular patio tables/chairs for patrons to enjoy outdoors. For the upcoming cooler months there is seating inside as well. Guests can bring a picnic basket, or can purchase light fare from the tasting room to enjoy with their wine.

In closing, we had a very nice time visiting Three Fox Vineyards and enjoying a slice of Tuscany . Delicious wines, remarkable views and a friendly staff make for an overall wonderful tasting experience. Three Fox Vineyards, located in Delaplane , VA is less than a mile off I-66 and about an hour from the DC metro area. Hello Pyromania,

I have not been to CA wine country, but I have heard other people who have suggest that VA countryside is equally as beautiful. When you get out of Virginia hustle and bustle metropolitan area she really shows well. Thanks and have a great week.

Happy Sipping!

I need to go here. The only other Nebbiolo I've had in Virginia was from the reserve list at Breaux. It was exceptional.

You have made me curious.

Thanks for taking the time to post a great article. We are looking for a nice picnic place for Mother's Day, a winery we hadn't been to before...looks like a good one.
