Wine Geek Speak: Lees

Hello Friends,

My recent vlog post on Kluge’s Sparkling Rosé sparked some interest via e-mail as to what in the heck were “lees”. I must admit, a few years ago, if someone mentioned “lees” to me in a tasting room, I would have been thinking about a pair of blue jeans.

In the wine world, “lees” refers to dead yeast cells, sediment, and grape particles that deposit on the floor of a steel tank or barrel during fermentation. Some winemakers opt to leave the wine in contact with the “lees” for a period of time to add complexity. This will generally impart a yeasty, toasty, and subtle nutty character into the wine and heighten the mouth-feel with a creamy texture.

On The Lees

The French expression for this is called ‘sur lie”, and as mentioned above, is generally done in attempt to add complexity to the finished wine. Some wines that benefit from “aging on the lees” or “sur lie aging”, are Chardonnay, Champagne, and sparkling wine made in the traditional method. If you come across a wine that displays the above mentioned character, check out the label or winemaking notes and verify if the wine was aged on the lees. Did you know? Vintage Champagne must age a minimum of three years on the lees, with many examples exceeding this requirement. Have a question about this post, friends? Quick Sip: Kluge Estate SP Rosé 2007

Hello Friends,

Today’s Quick Sip video-log is the 2007 Kluge Estate Sparkling Rosé. Kluge Estate is located in Charlottesville, VA and is on the Monticello Wine Trail. In my humble opinion, Kluge Estate excels in producing quality sparkling wines made in the traditional method. Kluge Estate also produces several nice ‘still’ red and white wine selections and a unique fortified dessert / aperitif wine. If you have trouble viewing this video, please try the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnWrTdIoa3I - Thank You!

Taste Live with Kunde Family Estate

Hello Friends,

I recently had the pleasure of participating in the Kunde Family Estate east coast bloggers event on Taste Live. As I’ve mentioned before, Taste Live is a popular online wine tasting community that utilizes social media platforms to bridge consumers, bloggers, press, etc., with wine growers, wine makers, and industry professionals for a unique, engaging, and enjoyable tasting experience. What heightened this tasting even more, was being joined by Kunde Family Estate's winemaker, Tim Bell, and proprietors Jeff and Marcia Kunde, via Ustream. Ustream is a live video streaming site that really made the Taste Live tasting experience more interactive and enjoyable. I would definitely like to see more Taste Live events with Ustream – like wine and food; the two are a perfect pair!

Kunde Family Estate

Kunde Family Estate is a fifth-generation, family owned and operated winery estate located in California’s renowned Sonoma Valley. Kunde employs sustainable farming practices and produces 100% estate-grown wines. We tasted and discussed the following wines: the 2009 Magnolia Lane Sauvignon Blanc, a 2008 Chardonnay, and a 2007 Reserve Century Vines Zinfandel (125 year old vines). All three of the wines tasted were nicely balanced, varietally correct, and reasonably priced. All of the participating bloggers enjoyed all three wines and only had positive things to tweet. Instead of me leaving tasting notes on each, I’ll leave you with some of the tweets I collected during the tasting.
  • MichaelGortonJr ~ Tasting through the #kundeestate wines from the #ttl all solid. And that does not happen all the time. Can't decide which I like best

Quick Sip: Delaplane Cellars Left Bank 2007

Hello Friends,

In the fall of 2007, I posted a blog entry titled “The Long, Hot Summer.” After hitting the Virginia wine trail that year, and talking to winegrowers from Central Virginia on up to Loudoun County, my inclination that the 2007 growing season was better than average - even great - was confirmed. The warm-to-hot and dry growing conditions of 2007,  gave winegrowers the opportunity to produce fuller-bodied, solid-structured wines with riper than usual fruit. These are some of the Virginia wines I’m enjoying now, as well as saving for later. Virginia wines such as the King Family Vineyard Meritage 2007 and Tarara Winery Meritage 2007, to name a few, exemplify the style and quality of wine Virginia can grow in outstanding vintage years. A recent visit to a new-comer on the Fauquier County wine trail, showcased a number of solid 2007 Virginia red wines, including a Cabernet Franc, two Bordeaux-style blends, and a Syrah.

Delaplane Cellars 2007 Left Bank

Making this week’s “Quick Sip”, is the Delaplane Cellars 2007 Left Bank. Aptly named, this Bordeaux-style blend is made up of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot. I think it’s a very good and respectable practice when Virginia producers credit the grape growers on the label, and this delicious wine comes by way of Tranquility Vineyard, Bella Luna Vineyard, and Springlot Vineyard – grown by Ben Renshaw of the newly opened 8 Chains North, Doug Fabbioli of Fabbioli Cellars, and John Everson. In the glass, the wine displays a deep purple-hued garnet color. The swirl and sniff offers inviting blackberry, dark currant, mocha, cocoa powder, and spice aromas, with subtle toasty notes. On the sip, the Delaplane Cellars 2007 Left Bank is beautifully balanced with a nice structure, a round, mouth-filling texture, and a lasting and complex finish. This red wine blend clocks in at a moderate 13.5% alcohol by volume, retails for $28, and has a real cork enclosure. Try this wine with red meat and game dishes or enjoy it on its own. All of Delaplane Cellars 2007 red wines are sipping very nicely right now and would also benefit from cellaring. Look for a review of my visit to Delaplane Cellars soon, friends. Owners, Jim and Betsy Dolphin really have something special going on off of Route 17 – high-quality wines, a beautiful tasting room, picturesque views, and a friendly and knowledgeable staff. If you haven’t visited Delaplane Cellars yet, make a date soon! Have a question about this post, friends? Feel free to leave a comment or send me an e-mail at myvinespot@yahoo.com, and as always, Happy Sipping! Stay tuned friends ...More to come!

Is That A Virginia Wine ?

Hello Friends,

Below is a quick v-log to help you determine if your Virginia wine is indeed a Virginia home grown wine or not. A brief conversation on Twitter sparked this video, so I pulled a few bottles out and jumped in front of my webcam (imagine that). Legally, it’s all on the wine label. Once you know what to look for,  you’re set!

Notaviva Vineyards: Wine & Music – A Perfect Pairing!

Hello Friends,

I recently had the pleasure of participating in Notaviva Vineyard's 2nd Annual Wine and Music pairing event, aptly titled, “The Notaviva Experience.” Notavia Vineyards is located in Hillsboro, Virginia on the Loudoun Heights cluster in Loudoun County. Notaviva is a grape’s throw away from Breaux Vineyards and Grandale Farms; so consider visiting the two producers and having lunch at Grandale Farms, a farm-to-table restaurant that’s a local favorite. Grandale makes an awesome blackend catfish sandwich - "trust me" - and offers a generous number of Virginia wines on the wine list.

Notaviva Vineyards

Notaviva is owned by Stephen and Shannon Mackey, who both have music backgrounds and share a passion for the art form. Prior to opening doors to the public in the summer of 2008, the Mackey’s beautiful tasting room and home was featured on the HGTV television network show Dream House. Click here to watch the archives. It’s amazing what the Mackey's have accomplished in such a short time and defines the phrase, “dare to dream.” Where I think food and wine, the Mackey’s think music and wine, and as I found out during the event, pairing wine with music required a bit more thought than expected. How deep is Notavia’s love for music and wine? Their wines are named after musical terms and the tasting notes follow suit in a really cool way.

Beautiful Views from the Tasting Room

The tasting event encouraged you to put away your personal likes and dislikes for a particular song and/or wine and focus on the wine and track played and how the two worked together. Just before the event, Stephen Mackey got on the mic and stated, “What if every wine had a genre of music that could heighten your tasting experience.” A few days prior to the event, I posed this question on Face-Book: What type of wine goes with punk rock? Jordan Harris, winegrower at Tarara Winery, had the right idea when he responded, “ Chambourcin - it’s edgy, can be all over the place, often has a lot more behind it, and makes some a little uncomfortable, but those that like it, love it.” During the event, we tasted five wines blind and each wine was accompanied by ten 30 second clips of music from varying genres. Our job was to evaluate the wines, the music, and select our best sensory pairing experience. Sounds easy, but was highly thought provoking and fun!

The Notaviva Expereince!

At the end of the tasting, results were submitted, compiled, loaded into a research database, and I’m looking forward to seeing the results. I wonder how consistent we were as a group with our sensory evaluations since we listened to the same music and enjoyed the same wines. I bet we were all over the place! In closing, Notaviva has a nice lineup of wines ranging from Viognier and Vidal Blanc to Chambourcin and Cabernet Franc, so make a date with Notaviva and enjoy the wine and music pairings for yourself, friends! Be sure to check their events page too. The tasting room was built with live performances in mind and they host many weekend music events. Have a question about this post, friends? Feel free to leave a comment or send me an e-mail at myvinespot@yahoo.com, and as always, Happy Sipping! Stay tuned friends ...More to come!
