Proof Wine Bar & Restaurant: Proof Positive!

Hello Friends,

After hearing a lot of positive buzz about Proof Wine Bar in the Penn Quarter neighborhood of Washington DC, I rounded up a few wine pals and sought to see if the proof was in the pudding – and yes, it is. Proof is not only a wine bar, but an elegant restaurant, serving modern cuisine with global influences.

Proof Wine Bar & Restaurant

Proof is divided into a cozy, but comfy wine bar section with additional lounge seating and a dining area for full restaurant service. The wine bar consists of tall tables and high-back chairs, a long wine bar, and small sofas and round tables. The dining area has traditional seating and booths, as well as a few tables to support large parties. The lighting is dimly lit throughout; the décor is modern, but not over the top, and the atmosphere is what I would call swanky, yet casual, and absolutely electric.
Wine Bar

Proof offers wines by the bottle and glass. Wines by the glass are dispensed from the popular Enomatic quality and temperature control machine in 2, 6, and 8.5 ounce pours. There are 16 whites and 16 reds offered, as well as a limited selection of Champagne and Sparkling wines by the glass. By the bottle, the wine list is almost endless, ranging from white, red, sparkling, etc., and fetching anywhere from comfortable and affordable to a king’s ransom – and, I really do mean a king’s ransom. There is also a very limited amount of local wine that is offered by the bottle – you know, Petit Verdot had to be on the list, right?

The food was great; I enjoyed a starter plate of foie gras and seared scallops with roasted Brussels sprouts (Yummy) for the main course. My wine pals enjoyed other tasty selections and the overall consensus was two thumbs up. The one thing that I would do differently if I’m doing Proof for dinner, as opposed to just a visit to the wine bar, would be to opt for the $91 four course meal with wine pairing.

The Scallops were Yummy!

The slogan at Proof is “food is the focus, and wine is the passion”. During my visit, I thought, how appropriate, that really summed up my evening. In closing, if good food and wine is your thing, then check the website out and take a trip over to Proof and see for yourself what all the foodies and wine enthusiast are talking about!
