Quick Sip: The Hess Collection 2012 Allomi Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
Today’s Quick Sip is The Hess Collection 2012 Allomi Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. The Hess Collection is renowned for expressive, well-structured Cabernet Sauvignons produced from mountain-grown Mount Veeder fruit. This single-vineyard selection comes from the estate’s Allomi Vineyard; a site situated just below the eastern base of Howell Mountain.
The 2012 growing season was ideal for Napa Valley’s prized grape variety, Cabernet Sauvignon. In addition to a great vintage, Hess cites the vineyard’s warmer temperatures and extended growing season as reasons for the wine’s round, ripe fruit character. For the Cork Exclusive special price of $23.99 (which includes free shipping on 3 or more bottles), this wine packs a lot of flavor and offers plenty of pleasure without breaking the piggy bank. It over-delivers for the (under $24) price point and is a very nice bottle to share with friends over a delicious meal. Review: The Hess Collection 2012 Allomi Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (SRP $30): This wine is drinking nicely right now; there are additions of Petite Sirah (10%) and Petit Verdot (2%) – with the latter contributing to the wine’s relative opacity. It pours a deep garnet color, delivering flavors of sweet black cherry, black currant, and blackberry joined by nicely integrated notes of vanilla bean, toasted brown baking spice, and dusty cocoa powder. In the mouth, the wine is harmonious with a velvet-like texture that’s framed by supple tannins, ending in a pleasing, spice-accented finish. Overall, a satisfying, reasonably price Cabernet to share with friends and enjoy at the dinner table – especially if grilled red meats or smoked pork is on the menu. Region: Napa Valley, California. Other info: ABV 14.4%, 18 months in American oak barrels, cork enclosure). Rating: 90.
