Quick Sip: Sleight Of Hand Cellars The Magician 2013 White Wine
Today’s Quick Sip is Sleight Of Hand Cellars’ The Magician 2013 White Wine. This wine is composed of 100% Riesling fruit sourced from Evergreen Vineyard in Washington’s Ancient Lakes of Columbia Valley AVA. Evergreen is a large wine growing site that’s well-regarded for white wine grape varieties such as Riesling, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and others. I was first introduced to Sleight Of Hand Cellars’ wines a few years ago by a friend who was drawn to the region’s red wines and the producer’s eye-catching vintage movie poster labels. He -- actually we -- later found that there was delicious juice inside the attractive bottles -- particularly their red blends and Syrah.
Sleight Of Hand Cellars is located in Walla Walla and owned by winemaker Trey Busch and partners Jerry and Sandy Solomon. The winery’s name pays homage to one of Trey’s favorite bands -- Seattle-based grunge rockers, Pearl Jam. The song, ‘Sleight of Hand’, which I assume coincides in some way, shape, or form to Trey’s own artistic revolution as a winemaker, is featured on the band's sixth studio album, Binaural. While I’m far more NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) and 80s/early 90s thrash metal than grunge, one thing we can agree on without a doubt is this is one rocking Washington Riesling. Review: Sleight Of Hand Cellars 2013 The Magician White Wine (SRP $23): This is the style of Riesling I enjoy having a well-chilled bottle of when I’m serving moderately spicy Asian cuisine and other zesty dishes. It’s fresh, sleek, and enticing -- brimming with crisp citrus and stone fruit flavors that mingle with green apple and faint mineral notes. The wine’s kiss of sweetness provides a good balance to its juicy, palate-cleansing acidity, ending in a clean, refreshing finish. This wine is a joy to drink on its own, won’t break the piggy bank, and is an exceptionally flexible food partner.
