Quick Sip: Wollersheim Winery 2013 Domaine du Sac

Hello Friends,

Today’s Quick Sip is Wollersheim Winery's 2013 Domaine du Sac. Wollersheim Winery is located on the Wisconsin River in the village of Prairie du Sac. The winery and vineyard is situated on a national historic site with a grape growing history that dates back to 1840. The winery's modern era began in 1972, when Bob and JoAnn Wollersheim bought the property and began restoring it to a working family winery. Twelve years later as part of an agricultural exchange program, Phillipe Coquard, who came from a multi-generational family of winemakers in Beaujolais, France, arrived at the winery and never left. He married the Wollersheims' oldest daughter, Julie. Today, the couple oversees winery operations and has paved the way for Wollersheim Winery to be recognized as one of the leading wineries in the Midwestern US. The Domaine du Sac has been produced since 1981 and the current release [2013] is quite delightful. For further information and where you can find this wine, please see my tasting notes below.

Review: Wollersheim Winery 2013 Domaine du Sac (SRP $14): This is a very approachable, medium-bodied blend from Lake Wisconsin (AVA) that is composed of 90% Marechal Foch and 10% 'Léon Millot – both cold hardy, early ripening grape varieties. Clear deep garnet in color, this wine offers aromas and flavors of black cherry, roasted (mixed) berries, shy wood tones, and a faint note of earth. It is textured but angular, with an overall charming supple character, finishing slightly tart with nice lingering acidity. If this producer can ship to you, I recommend giving this reasonably priced hidden gem a swirl, sniff, and sip! Region: Lake Wisconsin, Wisconsin. (Other info: ABV 13.5%, whole berry fermentation, matured in French and American oak barrels for five months, cork enclosure.) 87 Points. Click here to find this wine.
