Quick Sip: La Sirena 2005 Barrett Vineyard Syrah
Hello Friends,
Last week I had the pleasure of participating in another fun-filled hour of Cellars of Sonoma TV Tuesday. For this Tuesday’s webcast, proprietor and host Scott Jordan welcomed special guest winemaker Heidi Barrett of La Sirena Winery. Dubbed “the first lady of wine” by critic Robert Parker, Heidi’s long list of credentials includes one of California’s most well-known cult Cabernet Sauvignon wines – Screaming Eagle. For this tasting event, several of my wine blogging buddies and I had the opportunity to taste Heidi’s La Sirena 2005 Barrett Vineyards Syrah (SRP $80, Cellars of Sonoma Wine Club $60). The fruit for this wine comes from Heidi and husband Bo Barrett’s (of Chateau Montelena Winery fame) personal two acre estate vineyard that’s situated at the foot of Mount St. Helena.
La Sirena 2005 Barrett Vineyards Syrah
In the glass, the La Sirena 2005 Barrett Vineyard Napa Valley Syrah displays a deep garnet-purple color with complex aromas of dark berry fruit, spice/pepper, violet undertones, tar, and subtle notes of graphite-like minerality. As the wine opened up, slow-building notes of cured meat/bacon fat came out. The aromas persist on the palate, with dense and layered, yet balanced flavors, lightly chewy tannins, and a lasting dry finish. This wine has a good bit going on, as time in the bottle seems to have brought out some of its tertiary elements, while the primary and secondary characteristics integrate and play well together. I enjoyed this wine with sautéed calf's liver (don’t say yuck) with grilled onions and bacon and a serving of garlic mashed potatoes. Like most of the wines carried by Cellars of Sonoma, this selection is very limited production. The best way to get a bottle of Heidi's [Barrett Vineyard] Syrah on your dinner table and/or learn more about the producer and Cellars of Sonoma is to visit the links at the end of this post. Cheers!
