8 Chains North: Grand Opening August 21st!
Hello Friends,
Over the weekend I paid a visit to 8 Chains North - a small, family-owned and operated winery in Waterford, VA. 8 Chains North is the latest producer to hit the popular Loudoun County wine trail and is conveniently located off of Route 9. 8 Chains North is owned and operated by Ben Renshaw, who is a well respected Loudoun County grape grower. Ben has recently added winemaker to his resume and this did not come overnight. Ben has been in the wine-growing business since 1998 and the fruit of his labor is a delightful setting for Virginia wine lovers to sip, stay, and enjoy! (NOTE: If you cannot view the video please click on the following url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fqcNLQvBdM )
The 8 Chains North tasting room is housed in a spacious and attractive newly renovated barn. While I assume Ben has good taste, his fiancée Connie and sister Avis, owner of Mom’s Apple Pie, must have contributed to making the tasting room look and smell so wonderful. The tasting bar is double-sided and can accommodate large groups and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable – especially in the area of local food and wine. From the tasting bar, large picture windows look out to the deck and estate vineyard.
The wines currently being poured are the LoCo Vino, a refreshing white wine blend of 50% Traminette and 50% Vidal Blanc, a 2008 Sauvignon Blanc done in a Fume Blanc style, an estate-grown 2008 Merlot, and an estate-grown 2008 Furnace Mountain Bordeaux-style red blend. There is also a 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon available, but due to its limited production, it is not being tasted. Luckily, there was a bottle open so I got to taste it and it’s a nice example of what Loudoun County fruit can produce in outstanding vintage years.
Lastly, and most importantly, you will want to mark your calendars for the Grand Opening of 8 Chains North on August 21st, 2010. There will be live music from noon to 4pm, local food plates paired with each 8 Chain North wine, and more! Make a date with 8 Chains North on August 21st and help welcome Ben, family, friends, and staff to the blossoming Loudoun wine community.
