Albariño is a high-quality white wine grape variety that thrives in Spain’s Galicia region and in Portugal ’s Vinho Verde region where it’s known as Alvarinho. The first US plantings were right here in Virginia , but there is only a small amount of it planted and produced. Chrysalis Vineyards, located in Middleburg Virginia , makes a consistently good example that's delicious and well worth trying if you haven’t already. The Rías Baixas Denominación de Origen (DO), located in Galicia (Northwest coast of Spain), is Albariño’s homeland, and where some of the best examples in the wine world are produced. The grape variety is low yielding and the berries are small with thick skins, typically resulting in flavorful and rich wines. The Rías Baixas coastline, dotted with many fishing ports, is a haven for an endless supply of fresh seafood, which pairs perfectly with the area's most renowned white wine, Albariño.
2009 Martín Códax Albariño
I recently enjoyed the 2009 Martin Codax Albariño [Rías Baixas] with a tasty grilled salmon burger lunch. In the glass, the wine displays an attractive straw-yellow color with hints of green. The swirl and sniff offers expressive light citrus, peach, and floral aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, crisp and refreshing, with bright fruit, a subtle mineral character, a round texture, and a medium length clean finish. The wine is enclosed with a Stelvin rotating closure, retails for about $14.99, and clocks in at 12.5% ABV. Enjoy this wine with light hor'deurves or a wide variety of seafood and white meat dishes.
