Quick Sip: Chateau Maris 2011 La Touge

Hello Friends,

Today’s Quick Sip is Chateau Maris 2011 La Touge. Chateau Maris is a biodynamic vineyard located in Minervois La Liviniere, a red wine appellation of the Languedoc-Roussillon region in the south of France. Through biodynamic vineyard management and a non-interventionist, minimalist approach to winemaking, Chateau Maris's objective is to craft wines that best express the site(s) where they are grown and the vintage. From energy conservation, to recycling glass (bottle), water, and paper (label), Chateau Maris does a lot to minimize impact on the environment. Their Syrah-based La Touge, which combines deep berry fruit and earthy elements, is well-balanced, very reasonably priced, and a pleasant bottle of wine to have within reach for spring and summertime backyard barbecues. You can find the Chateau Maris 2011 La Touge at Cork-Exclusive for the special price of $14.99 with free shipping on any order. For further information, please see my tasting notes.

Review: Chateau Maris 2011 La Touge (SRP $25): Composed of 85% Syrah, 12% Grenache, and 3% Carignane, this deep purple colored wine leads with enticing aromas of purple and black fruit followed by a mélange of smoke, road tar, anise, a suggestion of violets, and hints of herbs de Provence. The aromas carry over onto the palate, with flavors that drive the mid-palate through the medium-long, earth-tinged finish. Overall, this is an appealing fuller-bodied wine that’s well-balanced, moderately complex, and delivers very good value for the money. A wonderful food wine, it will complement grilled red meats, seared duck breast, lamb chops – and one of my favorites, calf's liver with bacon, caramelized onions, all done up in a delicious sherry sauce. I recommend decanting this wine – to give it some air -- for approximately 30 minutes before serving. Region: Minervois La Liviniere, France. Other info: ABV 14.5%, 30% in new oak barrel and 70% in neutral oak for 12 months, cork enclosure. Rating: 89 Points.
