Quick Sip: Delaplane Cellars Left Bank 2007

Hello Friends,

In the fall of 2007, I posted a blog entry titled “The Long, Hot Summer.” After hitting the Virginia wine trail that year, and talking to winegrowers from Central Virginia on up to Loudoun County, my inclination that the 2007 growing season was better than average - even great - was confirmed. The warm-to-hot and dry growing conditions of 2007,  gave winegrowers the opportunity to produce fuller-bodied, solid-structured wines with riper than usual fruit. These are some of the Virginia wines I’m enjoying now, as well as saving for later. Virginia wines such as the King Family Vineyard Meritage 2007 and Tarara Winery Meritage 2007, to name a few, exemplify the style and quality of wine Virginia can grow in outstanding vintage years. A recent visit to a new-comer on the Fauquier County wine trail, showcased a number of solid 2007 Virginia red wines, including a Cabernet Franc, two Bordeaux-style blends, and a Syrah.

Delaplane Cellars 2007 Left Bank

Making this week’s “Quick Sip”, is the Delaplane Cellars 2007 Left Bank. Aptly named, this Bordeaux-style blend is made up of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot. I think it’s a very good and respectable practice when Virginia producers credit the grape growers on the label, and this delicious wine comes by way of Tranquility Vineyard, Bella Luna Vineyard, and Springlot Vineyard – grown by Ben Renshaw of the newly opened 8 Chains North, Doug Fabbioli of Fabbioli Cellars, and John Everson. In the glass, the wine displays a deep purple-hued garnet color. The swirl and sniff offers inviting blackberry, dark currant, mocha, cocoa powder, and spice aromas, with subtle toasty notes. On the sip, the Delaplane Cellars 2007 Left Bank is beautifully balanced with a nice structure, a round, mouth-filling texture, and a lasting and complex finish. This red wine blend clocks in at a moderate 13.5% alcohol by volume, retails for $28, and has a real cork enclosure. Try this wine with red meat and game dishes or enjoy it on its own. All of Delaplane Cellars 2007 red wines are sipping very nicely right now and would also benefit from cellaring. Look for a review of my visit to Delaplane Cellars soon, friends. Owners, Jim and Betsy Dolphin really have something special going on off of Route 17 – high-quality wines, a beautiful tasting room, picturesque views, and a friendly and knowledgeable staff. If you haven’t visited Delaplane Cellars yet, make a date soon! Have a question about this post, friends?
