Quick Sip: La Sirena Winery 2008 Pirate TreasuRed
Hello Friends,
Last week on Cellars of Sonoma TV Tuesday, host Scott Jordan welcomed special guest Heidi Barrett of La Sirena Winery. Heidi is one of the most well-known and respected winemakers in California. Her name was behind some of California’s most celebrated cult wines, including Screaming Eagle, Paradigm Winery, Grace Family Vineyards, Dalla Valle, etc. One of Heidi’s wines that my wine blogging cohort, Dan from Iowa, and I had an opportunity to taste was the La Sirena Winery 2008 Pirate TreasuRed. The Pirate TreasuRed is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Grenache and Petite Sirah. While Heidi consults for several other premium Napa Valley wineries, the La Sirena label, started in 1994, is Heidi’s personal project. Without further ado, let’s uncork the Pirate TreasuRed, mates!
La Sirena Winery 2008 Pirate TreasuRed
The Pirate TreasuRed blend comes in a short, rum-like bottle (750ml) with an old treasure map for a label with burnt edges. On first glance, one might mistake this bottle for a fun gimmick wine -- the type of wine where the packaging is far more interesting than the juice inside the bottle. That's not so much the case here, even though the packaging is fairly eye-catching; even amusing. This fruit-forward wine displays a deep ruby/purple color with aromas of [predominantly baked] cherry, raspberry, cassis, anise, warm spice and toasted vanilla notes. The palate is lush, mouth-filling, and round showing dense, ripe fruit, supple tannins, low-to-middling acidity, with (just) a touch of heat on the fruit-driven lasting finish. The La Sirena Winery 2008 Pirate TreasuRed clocks in at 14.7% ABV and retails for $60. Enjoy this wine on its own or try pairing it with dark chocolate. Wine and chocolate is a pairing I usually find difficult, but with Valentine’s Day around the corner this wine will do the trick ( ... I tried it already).
