Quick Sip: Ramian Estate Parlay 2009 Bookmaker
Today’s ‘Quick Sip,' the Parlay 2009 Bookmaker, is a recent release from Napa Valley winemaker Brian Graham of Ramian Estate. Their ‘Parlay’ brand features innovative blends at reasonable, everyday price points. The 2009 Bookmaker is a Cabernet Sauvignon (72%) based wine blended with small amounts of Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Petit Verdot. A large percentage of the Cabernet Sauvignon fruit comes from the Oak Knoll District while the other varieties and a small amount of Cabernet were sourced from the El Dorado appellation (sub-region of Sierra Foothills AVA). According to the tasting notes, the Ramian Estate Parlay 2009 Bookmaker was intended and created to be an ultra-plush, rich, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon based red wine.

Winemaker Brian Graham hit the target he was aiming for with this deeply colored, richly scented, and velvety-textured wine. The nose boasts inviting aromas of ripe blackberry, cassis, currant, and blueberry pie complemented by notes of vanilla and baking spice. The palate is ripe, soft, and fleshy -- bordering on jammy and almost gives off a note of sweetness with smooth tannins, middling acidity, and a medium-length, fruit-driven finish. This wine clocks in at 14.5% ABV, retails for $19.99, and is a fairly good deal for wine drinkers who favor smooth, ripe, fruit-driven wines. In closing, I also had an opportunity to taste Ramian Estate’s Varietal Series Merlot. This well-done, dense, and nicely structured Merlot benefits from two to three hours of breathing and opens up nicely. Even the fictional character Miles, the Pinot-loving wine snob from Sideways, who had some not-so-nice things to say about Merlot, would take a liking to this one.
