Quick Sip: Acquiesce Winery & Vineyards 2014 Picpoul Blanc

Hello Friends,

Today’s Quick Sip is the 2014 Picpoul Blanc from Acquiesce Winery & Vineyards in Lodi, California. I had an opportunity to try this wine for a recent Earth Day tasting which highlighted sustainable wine-growers that participate in the region’s certified ‘Lodi Rules’ program. While Lodi is well-known for its old-vine Zinfandel, Cinsault, and other robust reds, the region’s light and vibrant white wines, that oft-time showcase pure fruit flavors with food-friendly acidity, are worthy of your attention.

And one of the brightest spots you will find in Lodi is Acquiesce Winery & Vineyards. Moved by a white Châteauneuf-du-Pape, proprietor and winemaker Sue Tipton brought her love for Rhone varieties to Lodi, with one small catch – no reds. Sue grows and crafts small batches of bright and refreshing Rhone-inspired white wines (and one rosé) from 100% estate fruit, with an annual production of approximately 1000 cases.  Acquiesce is Lodi’s only winery [that I know of] dedicated to producing only white wines. Picpoul Blanc, an ancient white wine grape variety known for its high acidity, is largely found in southern France. It is not a variety you see planted throughout the U.S. in significant numbers. With less than 100 cases produced, Sue’s delicious Picpoul Blanc is a wine I recommend putting on your radar and dinner table – especially with spring and summertime sipping ahead! Gorgeous bottle, delicious juice inside!

Review: Acquiesce Winery & Vineyards 2014 Picpoul Blanc (SRP $24): Light straw colored, this wine shows fresh aromas and flavors redolent of unripe pear, juicy yellow-fleshed fruits and subtle floral notes, with an underlying wet stone-like minerality.  In the mouth, the delicate yet crisp flavors are wrapped in a sleek, racy texture with a solid core of vibrant acidity driving the clean, medium-long finish. The winery describes it as “a perfect summer by the pool wine." Though great on its own, it's also a wonderful food wine – think summer salads, grilled fish (fish tacos), scallops, and light poultry dishes. With only 100 vines planted, the winery produced approximately 98 cases of this delightful, mouthwatering white wine. Region: Lodi, California. Other info: ABV 12.5%, 100% Picpoul Blanc, stainless, estate grown, produced, and bottled, cork enclosure). Rating: 90 Points. Click here to find this wine.

I would like to thank Lodi Wine and Charles Communication for their time and invitation to the Earth Day virtual tasting. Always a grape time tasting and tweeting with you folks!
