Quick Sip: Palumbo Family Vineyards 2012 Rolling Hills Syrah
Hello Friends,
Today’s Quick Sip is the 2012 Rolling Hills Syrah from Palumbo Family Vineyards. Located in the heart of Temecula Valley wine country, Palumbo Family Vineyards is committed to crafting small lots of artisanal wine that best express their 13 acre site. Estate plantings include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Sangiovese, with blocks of Viognier and Syrah planted on neighboring properties. Proprietor and wine-grower, Nicholas Palumbo largely believes in producing only what he grows, saying “there is only two basic ingredients in making fine wine, the fruit itself and the barrels it ages in.”
This small, family-run vineyard and winery produces approximately 2,500 cases of wine annually. Their Rolling Hills’ single-vineyard Syrah is one of two Syrah varietal wines made. With grilling season upon us, I would recommend enjoying a bottle of Rolling Hills Syrah with barbecued pork, poultry, veggies, or (rosemary, fennel, and garlic) lamb sausage. For further information and where you can find this wine, please see my tasting notes below.
Review: Palumbo Family Vineyards 2012 Rolling Hills Syrah (SRP $45): This is an attractive Syrah from Palumbo Winery in Temecula. It is [satisfyingly] slender and lively – full of energy – exhibiting aromas and flavors redolent of ripe blackberries, fresh black cherries, and vanilla spice, with hints of dried herb and muted earth tones in the background. In the mouth, it is streamlined and approachable, with well-balanced acidity and a medium-long, clean finish. It is delightful to drink and inviting enough to enjoy with or without food, though, its vibrant character is perfect for sharing with friends at the dinner table. Only 125 cases of this wine were produced. Region: Temecula Valley, California. Other info: ABV 13.3%, open bin fermented, aged in 30% new French/Hungarian oak barrels for 23 months, cork enclosure. Rating: 90 Points. Click here to find this wine.
I would like to thank Palumbo Family Vineyards, the Temecula Winegrowers Association, and McCue Communications for their time and invitation to the #TemeculaSalut virtual tasting.
