Quick Sip: Amista Vineyards 2012 Tres
Today’s Quick Sip is Amista Vineyards 2012 Tres, a GSM blend composed of 34% Grenache, 33% Syrah, and 33% Mourvèdre. Located in Sonoma’s beautiful Dry Creek Valley, Amista Vineyards is a small business dream turned into reality by proprietors Mike and Vicky Farrow. An idea since 1982, the couple planted their first vineyard in 1994 and released the first wine under the Amista label approximately a decade later. In 2007, Mike and Vicky opened the Amista Vineyards’ tasting room in Healdsburg, California.
Since 2011, Ashley Herzberg, who combines her artistic side with a degree in Chemical Engineering, has carried out farm and winemaking duties. Foregoing a career in medicine, Ashley headed to Sonoma County to work harvest in a winery lab and has never left the area. She calls 2012, “A winemaker’s dream vintage,” adding, “Everything from bud break to harvest went incredibly well in Dry Creek Valley.” The resultant wine has good concentration, purity of fruit, and a luscious texture. This is a great bottle to share with family and friends at the dinner table -- especially if smoked or grilled fare is on the menu. Review: Amista Vineyards 2012 Tres (SRP $35): Deep purple colored, this GSM blend offers succulent raspberry and ripe plum flavors interwoven with sweet fruit cake, brown baking spices, and black cherry cola. It has an expansive and rich mouth-feel with pillow-soft tannins, ending with a long, fruit-driven finish dotted by a hint of dark chocolate. Overall, this is a delicious bottle of wine that shows good concentration, balance, and length. It is quite tasty on its own and a good match for foods like gourmet burgers or baby back ribs. Approximately 198 cases of this wine were produced. Region: Dry Creek Valley, California. Other info: ABV 14.1%, 100% Morningside Vineyard estate fruit, fermented in stainless, 18 months in neutral oak barrels, unfined and unfiltered. Rating: 90 Points. Click here to find this wine.
