Quick Sip: Godelia 2010 Mencia

Hello Friends,

Today’s Quick Sip is the Godelia 2010 Mencia. Bodegas Godelia is situated in Bierzo, a mountainous wine region in the northwestern portion of Spain; just below Galicia. It is here where Mencia, a little-known Spanish red grape variety, thrives. Mencia is capable of producing deeply colored, fragrant, and interesting wines worthy of your attention. This time of year, many of the wines I write about and share on social media are ideal bottles to pair with backyard cookouts. The Godelia 2010 Mencia ranks high on my BBQ match-maker meter and is an excellent choice for partnering with grilled or smoked game meats. At the Cork-Exclusive special price of $16.99 (with free shipping), this wine represents good value for the money. It is also an intriguing alternative red wine to share with friends and family over dinner. For further information, please see my tasting notes.

Review: Godelia 2010 Mencia (SRP $22): Deep ruby colored, this wine is both rustic and charming at the same time, delivering flavors of brambly blackberry, sun-dried purple/blue berry fruit, licorice, violets, and mineral tones – redolent of stones and flint, with just enough acidity to support the fruit and keep the wine appetizing. In the mouth, the wine is dense and velvet-like in texture, with dried dark fruit flavors and spiced cocoa-laced grainy tannins rounding out the medium-long finish. It is a ready sipping partner for grilled red meats or rich, red sauce dishes. I recommend letting it breathe for approximately 30 minutes before serving. Region: Bierzo, Spain. Other info: ABV 14.5%, 12 months in French and American oak barrels, cork enclosure. Rating: 89 Points.
